A lot of work has been done to build a democratic system through the reform: Zadig Abraha
Addis Ababa: December 30, 2014 (FBC) A lot of work has been done to build a democratic system in Addis Ababa, said Zadig Abraha, Minister of Democracy Building Coordination Center at the Prime Minister's Office.
Speaking on Fana TV's "Democratization and Nationalism" program on Ethiopia, the Minister said democracy building will not come all at once, but will be enriched with long-term practice and practice.
He said a lot of work has been done to build democracy in Ethiopia since the political transition.
Political prisoners have been released, media freedom has been respected, and security and other institutions have been politically neutral, especially since the prime minister came to power, he said.
He said the differences between the ruling party and the rival parties have been narrowed down to bring about national consensus, noting that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has met more than ten times with political party leaders and held the first peaceful and historic election in the country's history.
It is very difficult to build democracy in developing countries; However, he said Ethiopia is currently in a state of transition.
"Democracy is not about gaining recognition, it is about leading a country to development and growth," Zadig said.
He said the West, especially the United States, is putting pressure on Ethiopia in addition to supporting the terrorist group after understanding Ethiopia's diplomatic position.
However, the US-backed group has now reached a point where it can no longer defend itself, he said.
